Leopard gecko

The Leopard gecko or Eublepharis macularius, as it is called scientifically. Belongs to the family of eyelash geckos.

Eublepharis macularius is divided into 4 subspecies: Eublepharis macularius fasciolatus; Eublepharis macularius afghanicus; Eublepharis macularius montanus and, of course, Eublepharis macularius macularius.

The leopard gecko is native to southwestern Asia and can be found in India, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Turkmenistan, Iraq and Iran. There it inhabits semi-dry to dry areas, which consist of rocky steppes and semi-deserts.

During the day the leopard gecko lives in crevices and holes in the ground.
At dawn, he goes in search of food. It feeds mainly on insects, arachnids and sometimes small vertebrates.

Feeding animals that fit across the mouth of the leopard gecko are suitable for feeding. It should be fed as varied as possible, with well-cared feeding animals, so that the leopard gecko is best supplied with nutrients.

The leopard geckos can of course be kept individually, but better is an attitude of a female group or 1 male with at least 2 females. A pair of attitude is not to be advised. For a species-appropriate attitude a terrarium of at least 80x40x40 cm is recommended. However, the principle should be that the larger the more comfortable the leopard gecko is.

The terrarium should have many hiding places and some narrower gaps. Narrow gaps can be realized very simply by 3D rear walls. The ground should consist of clay or stone tiles.

A daily average temperature of 28 to 32 degrees Celsius is considered optimal for the leopard gecko. Under the sun place up to 40 degrees Celsius are possible. At night, the temperature in the terrarium should be kept at 20 to 23 degrees Celsius. In addition, a humidity of about 40 - 55% per day and about 60 - 75% at night should be respected.
